Yankees reduce payroll, luxury tax owed

NEW YORK — The New York Yankees lowered spending on players by $12 million this year, cutting payroll by $5 million and slashing their major league-leading luxury tax by more than $7 million.

New York was hit with an $18 million luxury tax Tuesday by Major League Baseball. The tax was New York's lowest since 2003 and down from $25.7 million last year, when the Yankees won the World Series.

"Atta baby. And right now we're in the $170s," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said, looking ahead to his 2011 payroll.

Season-ending payroll information and the tax was sent to teams Tuesday and obtained by The Associated Press.

Boston is the only other team that will have to pay. The Red Sox, who missed the playoffs this year, exceeded the payroll threshold for the first time since 2007 and owe $1.49 million.

Utah State hires Wells to be QB coach

LOGAN — Utah State football coach Gary Andersen announced Tuesday that he has hired former Utah State player Matt Wells to be the Aggies' quarterbacks coach.

A three-year letterman at Utah State, Wells played quarterback for four years (1993-96) and was the starter as a sophomore.

Wells, who is 37 and a native of Sallisaw, Okla., received his bachelor's degree in business marketing from Utah State in 1996. He has also taken courses at the Huntsman School of Business in pursuit of his MBA.

Wells returns to Utah State after coaching at New Mexico, where he coached the wide receivers and kick off return unit last season. In 2009, Wells was the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at Louisville.

COURCHEVEL, France — Austrian skier Marlies Schild flew down the Courchevel course to win her second World Cup slalom of the season Tuesday, while overall leader Lindsey Vonn and rival Maria Riesch crashed out in their first runs.

Schild was in second place behind Finland's Tanja Poutiainen after the first run and laid down a faultless second run to finish in a combined time of 1 minute, 34.95 seconds, 0.78 ahead of Poutiainen.

Slovenia's Tine Maze was a distant third, 1.98 behind Schild. Vonn and Riesch were among the more than 20 skiers who failed to finish the first run on the highly technical Stade Emile Allais course that Schild made look easy.
