First gold

Swiss ski jumper Simon Ammann won the first gold medal of the Vancouver Olympics, earning his third Olympic title by winning the normal hill event.

Slow down

The Olympic luge track, slightly modified to make it less perilous and more than 5 mph slower, reopened less than 24 hours after Nodar Kumaritashvili of Georgia died in a horrifying crash. The effect was clear: None of the 37 sliders in training broke 90 mph after speeds routinely surpassed 95 mph earlier in the week.

President speaks up

With officials blaming human error for Kumaritashvili's death, he was vigorously defended by the president of his country. Georgian leader Mikhail Saakashvili said human errors happen, but "no sports mistake is supposed to lead to a death."

Mascot haters?

More than 200 masked protesters protested in downtown Vancouver, and some hurled newspaper boxes through display windows of a popular department store selling Olympic souvenirs. Seven people were arrested.

"It's still fresh in our hearts. We're not able to compete with that same joy," said men's luge racer Shiva Keshavan from India.
