RICHMOND, Cache County — An empty building that owners planned to demolish collapsed on its own, much to the surprise of a Cache County Sheriff's deputy parked across the street Thursday evening.
The building at 15 S. 200 West in Richmond, which was used as a warehouse in the past, collapsed on itself about 6:45 p.m., knocking down power lines in the process, Sheriff's Lt. Chad Jensen said in a statement.
A deputy parked in the Maverick store just north of the building witnessed the collapse. The incident is still under investigation. Jensen said they don't know what caused the building to collapse but that it doesn't appear anything suspicious was involved.
The building is owned by the Maverick store and owners were looking into permits to demolish the former warehouse.
Crews worked to secure the building from any further collapse and Highway 91 was shut down while the power lines were repaired. Northbound lanes were reopened by 10:30 p.m.
A dollar amount on damage is unknown.
