Karl Malone scored 16 of his 31 points in the 4th quarter to lift the Utah Jazz to a 111-101 victory over the expansion Orlando Magic. With the win, the Jazz (42-17) can claim to have beaten every team in the NBA this season — the first time in franchise history that's happened.
Thurl Bailey added 20 points, and Mike Brown contributed 12 points and a season-high 11 rebounds for the Jazz. John Stockton had 12 assists for Utah, which leads the NBA's Midwest Division by 3 1/2 games.
Meanwhile, on the college basketball scene, BYU wrapped up a share of the Western Athletic Conference regular-season title despite losing four of its last six games.
BYU, which shared the WAC crown with Colorado State, takes a 21-7 record into this week's conference championship tournament. The Cougars' first-round WAC tourney opponent: rival Utah (15-13). The two teams split their regular-season series, each team winning by 16 points on its home court.
Both teams are battling injuries. Utah star Josh Grant is nursing a pulled hamstring, while BYU's Andy Toolson (knee), Steve Schreiner (ankle) and Kevin Santiago (back, arms, knees) are all hobbling to some extent.
