Barbara Bailey

Behling

1922 ~ 2010

Barbara Bailey Behling was born September 21, 1922 and died April 27, 2010. She grew up in Logan and Ogden, Utah and graduated from Ogden High School. She married Ray Johnson Behling in the Logan LDS Temple. During World War II she began training as a nurse in Brigham City. Her training was interrupted by the birth of her first child, Carolyn. After the war, Ray's job required them to move every year or so. Their second child, James, was born in Chicago, Ill. From this Barbara developed a love of travel. In 1970, she and Ray, their two children and their spouses jammed into a VW bus and spent four glorious weeks touring Europe on what was billed as a once-in-a-lifetime trip. After that she and Ray had the opportunity to travel to Europe several times, with and without children, always finding new and exciting corners to explore. They also traveled around the country as Ray went to meetings for his work. As the effects of her earlier polio began to wear on her, she still traveled with a wheelchair when necessary. She loved to tell stories of Ray throwing her over his shoulder and rushing to catch a subway in London. After Ray's death, she continued traveling with her family as often as possible.

Barbara was courageous and willing to try anything that involved being with her husband and family. Ray spent many years as a structural engineer for the state of Utah and Barbara often traveled with him when he went to inspect bridges and other construction sites. One time she walked out on the bare girders of an unfinished bridge over the 400 ft. deep Wolf Creek Gorge. She later said she was terrified of heights, but if Ray was going to go out there and fall, she wasn't going to be left behind.

She was a registered record librarian and worked at the Dee and McKay/Dee Hospitals for 21 years. Her greatest joy was to be surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She had the ability to make others feel good about themselves and everywhere she went she collected good friends.
