Despite the suspensions of two of its top sprinters, the BYU men's track and field team held off Texas-El Paso to win yet another Western Athletic Conference track and field championship. The Cougars scored 245 points to capture their sixth straight WAC title, with UTEP a distant second at 185. Utah finished fourth.

The BYU women's team, meanwhile, won another High Country Athletic Conference title with 201 points, leaving the Cougars well ahead of runner-up New Mexico with 141. Utah State finished third with 133.

In the WAC meet, Scott Moon, a guard on the BYU basketball team who was competing in track and field for the first time in four years, won the high jump with a leap of 7 feet, 1/2 inch, and Frank Fredericks tied for first in the 100-meter dash. Shaun McAlmont, who because of injuries had run only two races all year, was second in the high hurdles and fourth in the intermediates. Brian Mitchell, a defensive back on loan from the football team, was a surprising third in the 100.
