Historic buildings at Gardner
Village include:
West Jordan Mill
(Archibald's Restaurant and Country Furniture & Gifts): Listed on
the National Register of Historic Places, the mill was built in 1877 to
replace a smaller mill on the same site. It passed through several
owners until it was purchased by Nancy Long in 1979 and restored. A
16-foot overshot water wheel was installed on the exterior of the
building.
St. Joer/Orr Cabin
(currently vacant): First owned by Ephraim St. Joer, this cabin came
from Clover/Rush Valley. Hamilton "Hammy" Orr and his brother Rodney
lived there for years. A boy named Cliff Carson, age 3 1/2, moved in
with Hammy when Cliff's father died. He grew up there and went on to
serve as Tooele County sheriff from 1970-74.
Migrant Workers
Home (Cottage Retreat Day Spa): This building began as a storage
shed at a small World War II arms plant located near 2100 S. Redwood
Road. In 1974, it was moved to the Joseph J. Schmidt farm in West
Jordan, where it housed migrant farm workers.
Orson Albert
Johnson Cabin (Kamille's): Orson A. Johnson, a resident of
Clover, had this cabin built in 1886. It is a rare example of a
hand-hewn, two-story log cabin.
Riverton house
(Just Us Girls): The age and history of this house is largely unknown.
It was located at 12738 S. Redwood Road before being donated to Gardner
Village.
Welby Train
Station (Sweet Afton's): This depot once served the town of
Welby, located in West Jordan where the Old Bingham Highway intersects
with 4000 West and 9000 South. It was named after A.E. Welby, general
superintendant of the Rio Grande Western/Denver & Rio Grande
Railroad.
Midvale Mayor's
House (Sassy Babies): A turn-of-the-century Victorian house
belonged to Lloyd Alexander Porter, a four-term mayor of Midvale,
starting in 1926. U.S. Steel also used the building as a "company
house."
Irving/Steadman
House (Upon the Shelf): This house was built on the Irving
property at 3200 S. Redwood Road and later moved to 7609 S. Redwood
Road. Chris K. and Roberta Lindsey Steadman moved into the house as
newlyweds and established a chicken farm in 1942.
Twin Historic Cabins (currently vacant): Parts
of two cabins from Rush Valley and St. Johns were used to create this
cabin. The front part, the Russell cabin, was originally built in
Mercur, a mining boom town in the Oquirrh Mountains east of Rush Valley
and later moved to St. Johns. The rear part was built in 1876 by John
and Mary Ellen Ahlstrom, who lived there with their 11 children.
Dawson House
(Anastasia's Attic): This house was built by Mr. and Mrs. Willard D.
Dawson in 1933 and was once located at 1114 S. Redwood Road.
Walker Home
(Storybook Nook): Built in 1889 by John Henry Walker, who became a
widower with six children in 1902. Walker married Clara Elizabeth Beeny
in 1905; she was the mother of five children, and together they had one
more. Walker died in 1917. Clara continued to live in the house, which
did not have an indoor bathroom or heat other than her coal stove, until
1958. She always treated visitors to her home to homemade bread and
jam.
Brady House
(Purse-onality): This house was located at 8930 S. 1300 East, an area
once known as Bradyville, then Fort Union and now Midvale. The
building's architecture dates from the early 1930s.
Henderson House
(Highlite Photography): Built around 1863, the walls are constructed of
24-inch-thick adobe. LDS Church President Brigham Young stayed in the
house in 1867 while attending the dedication of the nearby Rock Meeting
House across 7800 South from the Gardner property.
