William Nielsen

1927 ~ 2010

Ramon (Ray) William Nielsen, age 82 of Elk Ridge, Utah, passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at Payson, Utah. He was born November 16, 1927 at Salt Lake City, Utah to William Joseph and Ida Leone Brown Nielsen.

He married Shirley Reed Nielsen, September 7, 1948 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

He served in the Military Police during the occupation of Japan at the conclusion of World War II and as a 1st Lieutenant in the Air Force during the Korean War.

Ray graduated from Utah State University in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Dairy Manufacturing and worked for HyKo Chemical; Emmett Truck & Implement and Boise Cascade. He received his Teaching Certificate from Portland State in 1966 and taught at Hillsboro Junior High in Oregon. For many years, he was a food scientist for Carnation Co. in Van Nuys, CA. He also owned and operated Nielsen Pet Foods and worked for Flowell Electric and Stuart Electric. He enjoyed raising Beagles, leather work, jazz music and photography.

He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as: a High Councilor; Bishop and Counselor in two Bishoprics; High Priest Group Leader; Family History Indexer and served in Stake and Ward Young Men's presidencies. He also completed missions with his wife in the Puerto Rico San Juan, Cove Fort, UT, and Spain Malaga missions.

Survivors include: his wife, Shirley Reed Nielsen, Elk Ridge, UT; children, Reed (Donna) Nielsen, Rexburg, ID; Les (Carol) Nielsen, Highland Ranch, CO; Steven (Sonia) Nielsen, Draper, UT; Patti (David) Field, Garland, UT; Nancy (Chris) Key, Washington, UT; Lauri Giles, Springville, UT; Heidi Nielsen, Riverton, UT; 34 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a great-granddaughter, Cora Lynn McInnes.

Funeral services will be Saturday, June 26, 2010, 1:00 p.m. in the Elk Ridge 2nd Ward Chapel, 259 Alpine Drive, Elk Ridge, Utah. Friends may call at the Walker Mortuary, 587 South 100 West, Payson, Friday, 6-8:00 p.m. or at the church Saturday, 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. Burial will be in the Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery, Sandy, Utah where Military Rites will be accorded.
