SALT LAKE CITY — The U.S. Bankruptcy Court has appointed a new judge for Utah.

Joel T. Marker will be sworn in Thursday, and a public investiture will be held July 9 at the Frank E. Moss Federal Courthouse. Marker replaces Judge Judith A. Boulden, who retired.

Marker, 53, is a 1984 graduate of the University of Utah College of Law. A native of La Crosse, Wis., he earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1979. Marker has been a member of the panel of Chapter 7 trustees in Utah since 1997 and has represented individuals and businesses in a variety of proceedings in state and federal court.

The U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Utah is authorized three judges. In 2009, the court received 14,481 bankruptcy filings, a 56 percent increase from the previous year.
