PROVO — One Utah town is trying to solve a broken elevator problem without breaking the bank.
The three-story Provo City Center has only one elevator.
Facilities manager Dick Blackham says the elevator's 35-year-old controller failed. Fixing it is proving difficult. The needed piece must be built from scratch. That will take 10 weeks and more than $9,500.
The city really needs a new elevator. But that will take more time and money — 14 weeks and roughly $69,400, the Daily Herald of Provo reported.
Mayor John Curtis was stuck in the elevator on Sept. 9 and says he isn't sure which fix makes the most sense.
He says the city should use tax dollars responsibly. But with no elevator, Provo risks a lawsuit for being out of compliance with disability access laws.
