OGDEN, Utah — Members of the Shupe family, ranging in age from newborn to the 90s, gathered at the Ogden Cemetery on Saturday to place memorial plaques for two of their ancestors who were members of the Mormon Battalion.
James Wright Shupe and his older brother, Andrew Jackson Shupe, both served in Company C of the Mormon Battalion, which marched across the Plains in 1846 to fight in the Mexican-American War. They were among 500 men who left their wives and children in Illinois. The brothers later were united with their families and ended up living in the Ogden area.
The Mormon Battalion Association joined the Shupe descendants to commemorate the service of the two pioneers.
