SALT LAKE CITY — Deseret Book customers and friends of LDS Church President Thomas S. Monson are being asked to do good deeds during the next few months and fill the giant glass jars in the 37 stores with colorful, warm fuzzies.
Inspired by the success last year when President Monson asked people to serve others as their birthday gifts to him, Deseret Book managers decided to see how many soft pompoms they could collect between the release date of President Monson's biography, "To The Rescue," and the end of the year.
Customers are invited to jot down a description of what service or act of kindness they've performed and pick up a warm fuzzy to drop into the jar.
Huge glass jars are prominently displayed in each store in the United States awaiting the pompoms. Pompoms and paper are supplied at no cost to the customer.
Customers also can contribute online, putting virtual warm fuzzies into a collection space at deseretbook.com/totherescue.
The virtual fuzzies, along with the actual fuzzies and stories of service collected at the stores, will be delivered to President Monson in January.
"We hope that thousands will participate," said Leigh Dethman, Deseret Book marketing specialist. "A simple act of kindness goes a long way. President Monson taught that these acts bless both the giver and the receiver with even one good deed having the power to affect many people. So what would happen if hundreds, thousands or even millions of individuals made an extra effort to perform even one additional act of service? What would the impact be? We'd like to find out."
