George Lamar Sorenson1924 ~ 2011Lamar passed away Nov. 30, 2011 in Salt Lake City.He was born in Ephraim, Utah September 16, 1924 to George W. and Jennie Blain Sorenson. He married Pearl Nacenta in Payson, Utah July 26, 1951.He was always proud of his Ephraim and Sanpete heritage and always seemed to meet someone from Sanpete wherever he went. He used to say that those from Sanpete were the real chosen people. However, what they were chosen for was never really clear. Lamar grew up in Ephraim and graduated from Snow High School and Snow College. He attended the U of U and graduated from BYU with a Business Degree and was a veteran of World War II, having served at Seventh Army Headquarters at the Presidio in San Francisco.Lamar started his business career with his brother-in-law in Payson and managed the Surf and Turf Café and Service Station for five years. He subsequently moved to Henderson, Nevada and managed the Polar Queen Drive In. He was the first to install a drive in window at a fast food outlet. In 1959 Lamar moved back to Salt Lake and built and operated the Iceberg Drive In on 39th South and 9th East for 30 years. He was famous for selling thick malts and shakes in any flavor imaginable.He is survived by his wife Pearl, two children, son Tony and (Keiko) of Old Greenwich, CT., and daughter Jan (Greg) Malmberg of Sandy, UT., five grandchildren, Nina, Mia, Tom, Marcus and Connor.Lamar came from a family of nine children, and is survived by two sisters, Wanda Bachman and Melvona Boren and one brother Ken Sorenson. The family is very close and has set a fine example for its posterity.Following cremation, a memorial service will be held on Sat., Dec. 10, at 12 Noon in the Willowcreek 6th Ward, 8445 South 2115 East (Sublette Place).
