HONOLULU — Relatives of those who died when a Navy submarine rammed into a Japanese fishing vessel are expected to attend a service remembering the nine men and boys killed exactly a decade ago.

The Japanese families are expected to observe a moment of silence at 1:43 p.m. Wednesday — the time when the USS Greeneville surfaced beneath and rammed the Ehime (EH'-hee-may) Maru on Feb. 9, 2001, off Oahu.

The ceremony will be held at the Ehime Maru Memorial at a park near downtown Honolulu overlooking the Pacific.

Officials from Japan's Ehime prefecture and the city of Uwajima (oo-wah-JEE'-mah) are scheduled to speak and lay wreaths.

The Navy and the submarine's captain apologized following the highly publicized accident, although not as quickly as the victims' families wished.
