Cora Broadbent McCarrey 1919 ~ 2011
Cora Broadbent McCarrey was born July 21, 1919 in Heber City, Utah and passed away at home in Anchorage on February 28, 2011. Cora was the eighth child and second daughter born to Sylvester Broadbent and Maggie Josephine Murdock. Her early years were spent in Heber City, Utah. Her summers were spent on the family ranch near Evanston, Wyoming, where Cora was responsible for helping with meals for the family and ranch hands and for doing all the ironing. They later moved to Salt Lake City when her oldest brother began school at the University of Utah. While attending the University of Utah herself, Cora met James Lewis "Mac" McCarrey, Jr. They were married on April 3, 1939 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in Salt Lake City. After their marriage, Cora accompanied Mac to Alaska on his sales trips for Utah Woolen Mills. They alternated between Alaska and law school in Utah until they moved permanently to Anchorage in 1941. All four of their children were born and raised in Alaska. Cora's husband, J.L. McCarrey, Jr. was appointed as a Territorial Federal Judge in 1953 and served in that capacity until Alaska became a state in 1959. At that time, Cora and Mac decided that he should go back into the private practice of law. Cora was going to help with the transition for what they thought was to only be a few weeks, but she remained the general office manager until the firm closed in 1998. Cora's greatest joy was her family. Her children state, "Our mother provided us a home that was a 'refuge from the storm.' From her nurturing example, we received strength and unwavering support. She blessed our lives with encouragement and taught by word and deed the principles of truth, faith, gratitude, laughter and service to others. At no time do any of us recall a raised voice, words spoken in anger, or an utterance of an unkind word towards any person." Cora was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She faithfully served throughout her life in many Branch, Ward and Stake callings, including Primary, Young Women and Relief Society. Another one of her joys was being present at the dedication of and later serving in the Anchorage Alaska Temple. Her children are grateful for the influence she has been and continues to be in their lives and her grandchildren's lives, and know that her life will serve as an example of compassion, graciousness, faith and strength for future generations. Cora is survived by her four children, Cora Alice "Cam" (Bill) Bohman of Anchorage; James Lewis "J.L." (Barbara) McCarrey, III of Anchorage; Margaret Ann "Marti" (Lee) Hales of Nampa, Idaho; and David Broadbent (Donna) McCarrey of Anchorage; as well as her sister Jayne B. (Terry) Malan of Salt Lake City, Utah; 22 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and their families. Cora was preceded in death by her husband, James Lewis "Mac" McCarrey, Jr.; brothers L. Verl, Benn E., Joseph Ray (J.R.), Reed M., Cloyd S., Thomas K. and D. Clay Broadbent; and sister, Elaine B. Curtis. A memorial service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Lake Hood Chapel located at 3340 West 40th Avenue, Anchorage, Alaska at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, 2011. Visitation will be from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. in the Relief Society Room. Burial will be at the Fort Richardson National Cemetery.
