PROVO — With still a day to go at the Utah State Track and Field Championships, the battle at the top of the girls 5A standings features two familiar teams.

Davis leads Riverton by a single point (25-24) after four events. The bulk of the finals will conclude today at BYU's Clarence F. Robison Track.

"I think we're in a position to win if we perform like we know we can," Davis head coach Corbin Talley said.

The Darts' Shea Martinez and Ellie Child helped their team's cause with strong performances in the 1,600 meters final. Martinez finished first, while Child was third. Bingham's Laura Young took second place.

Erika Birk of North Summit dominated the 2A 1,600 meters, beating the rest of the field by 31 seconds.

It was also all North Summit in the long jump, with Samantha Nicholes and Erica Richins taking the first two spots.

North Summit is also dominating in the team standings after one day, racking up 61 points. San Juan is second with 20 points.

In the 1A 1,600 meters, Alex Shaw and Andrea Chavez did their part to put their team at the top of the standings by finishing first and third, respectively. Katie Nielson of Dugway was second, while teammates of Shaw and Chavez, Lyna Garcia and Emily Brandt, were fifth and sixth, respectively.

After the five finals on Friday, St. Joseph is in first with 28 points, with Monticello (27) and Green River (26) right behind.

Morgan's Chelsey Stegelmeier and Kassie Nagel helped their team stay atop the 3A standings with good showings in the shot put. Stegelmeier finished first while Nagel was third. Bear River's Josie Payne finished second.

Morgan leads Cedar by a single point (26-25), with Park City in third with 24 points.

Spanish Fork's Kaitlin Urmston, competing in the 4A javelin, had the best distance at any classification, with a throw of 135 feet, four inches.

In the 4A team standings, Ogden is leading with 24 points. East is in second with 14 points, while Tooele is third with 13.

Riverton head coach Mike Hutchings said his athletes performed how they wanted to after the first day.

"We did about how we expected to," he said. "We knew coming in how tough it would be to beat Davis."
