SOUTH JORDAN — A woman allegedly shot and killed by her husband in a park Tuesday had filed a petition to divorce him that same day.

And court records also indicate that two of Douglas Irwin's previous wives had filed protective orders against him during the 1990s.

Police believe Douglas Irwin, 51, and his wife, Jana Lynn Irwin, 46, arrived at South Jordan City Park, 10950 S. Redwood Road, together Tuesday afternoon. The Riverton couple was observed having a conversation under a pavilion. Witnesses said they did not notice any argument or red flags, according to police.

But as they were walking back to their SUV, police say the husband shot his wife in the head and then shot himself. Jana Irwin was pronounced dead at the scene. Douglas Irwin remained in extremely critical condition Wednesday at a local hospital.

South Jordan police Wednesday said they are looking at the divorce as a possible motive for the shooting.

Two of Douglas Irwin's former wives have previously filed protective orders against him.

In 1993 and 1995, Marlin Irwin filed for protective orders against Douglas Irwin, claiming cohabitant abuse. In 1996, Douglas Irwin filed for a protective order against Marlin Irwin, also claiming cohabitant abuse, according to court records. She later filed a counter petition for a protective order. They were divorced in 1997.

In 1997, Jodie Irwin filed a protective order against him, court documents state. She filed another claim of cohabitant abuse in 1998. Jodie Irwin also filed for divorce in 1997.

Another woman, Lana Mae Irwin, also filed for divorce from Douglas Irwin in 1986, according to court records.

Jana Lynn Irwin filed for divorce from him Tuesday in 3rd District Court.

South Jordan police said they are looking at the history between Douglas and Jana Irwin and that the investigation into the shooting is still active.

Unified police said they responded once to the Irwins' Riverton home in the past year for a domestic violence related call. That was in January.
