Philip Elliott of the Associated Press reported on a meeting held by Republicans in New Orleans ("Republican candidates jostle over who is toughest," June 18).

It is an example of liberal bias. Elliott takes the tone of a person who has immense knowledge and understanding and who can't refrain from commenting on what he considers the obvious stupidity of the Republican candidates.

He pronounces his all-knowing judgment on them all by saying, "Their rhetoric doesn't always match with reality." He gives his own opinion that "they may erode their credibility among the moderates and independents who ultimately decide the presidential race."

Who knows but what their positions may enhance their credibility with all segments of voters? Mr. Elliott can't possibly know, yet he insidiously tries to influence his readers against these candidates.

I would much prefer a straightforward, non-biased report of what occurred at the meeting.
