SALT LAKE CITY — When the manager of a Salt Lake City grocery store decided to take a closer look at a suspicious check, the customer got nervous and fled the store.

He forgot one thing: his ID.

A Murray man was charged in the April 4 incident at the Ream's grocery store at 2783 S. State. The man had presented a check for $502.12 that was drawn on an account purportedly belonging to a company called "Varilease," charges state.

The manager called to verify the check's validity, and the man ran out of the store, leaving behind his temporary driver's license. The manager told police the customer matched the photo on the license.

Later, the man told police that he got scared when it was taking longer than normal to get the check approved.

A representative of Verilease Financial Inc. told investigators that one of their account numbers had been stolen and used to produce forged checks.

The man is facing numerous charges, including forgery, a third-degree felony; theft by deception and attempted theft by deception, both class B misdemeanors. He is also charged with successfully cashing a similar check for $474.02 at the Ream's store at 2600 W. 4700 South on April 2.
