MIAMI — Florida International quarterback Wesley Carroll took tons of grief last season for his long hair.

Some members of FIU's coaching staff teased him about it. Opposing players tried to pull the locks that stretched from the bottom of his helmet. Fans in one stadium told him he looked like a girl.

Only Carroll knew he was growing it out for a good reason.

After leading the Panthers to their first Sun Belt title and bowl victory, he cut his hair off and donated it to cancer victims.

His look is much cleaner-cut now, although there's no plans to get another trim anytime soon. FIU opens the season Thursday night against North Texas.
