Harry Edgar Wickes1925 ~ 2012Harry Edgar Wickes, 86, of Provo, Utah, passed away Sunday, May 13, 2012 to give his beloved wife Becky who predeceased him a wonderful Mother's Day gift. He was born June 24, 1925 to Horace Wickes and Wilhelmina Catherine Lehmann in Portland, Oregon. He was raised in the Los Angeles area and shortly after graduating from high school, he moved to Ogden, Utah. He joined the army just after his 18th birthday, and served in World War II in New Guinea, the Philippines and Korea. When he returned, he attended BYU and graduated with a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Mathematics.Harry married Becky Elaine Fernelius on March 31, 1949 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and they had three children. He taught high school Mathematics in Turner, Montana, Driggs, Idaho, and Carey, Idaho (where he was also the principal) before joining the faculty at BYU in 1957, where he taught Mathematics to prospective teachers for 33 years. Harry also earned a Masters Degree from Harvard University, and a Doctors of Mathematics Education from Colorado State College (University of Northern Colorado).Harry served an LDS mission with Becky in the Arizona Tucson Mission, and held other positions in the LDS church, including Bishop's Counselor, High Councilor, Ward and Stake Financial Clerk, Home Teacher, extraction worker, and worker in the Provo LDS Temple.Harry is survived by a daughter, Bonnie, two sons, Gene (Gwenyth) and David (Lezlie), two sisters, Marguerite Harris and Eleanor (Leith) Tolboe, 7 granddaughters, 7 grandsons, two great-granddaughters and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Becky, parents, brother Bill, and sisters Rosemary and Natalie.Visitation and funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.respectively, Saturday, June 2 at the Lakeside 8th Ward Chapel, 131 South 1600 West, Provo. Interment will be in the Uintah City Cemetery. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m.The family would like to thank Dr. Gary Garner, Nancy Trapnell, and the other Drs. and hospice workers as well as the employees at Beehive Homes of Orem, who took great care of him.
