HERRIMAN — Another home caught fire here just after midnight Saturday, bringing the total number of homes burned in the Rose Crest Fire to at least six — three homes destroyed and three damaged.
This is in addition to an undetermined number of structures that have also burned, including sheds, barns and at least one detached two-car garage.
Fire officials said the fire grew to about 670 acres Saturday morning with 15 percent containment.
The mandatory evacuation order for Herriman was expected to remain in effect through at least Saturday evening when officials would reassess the situation.
The Red Cross reported 13 people stayed the night at the shelter set up at Herriman High School while 172 took advantage of the food and services that were provided.
Many of the streets around Herriman that were closed Friday night were reopened Saturday. But officials urged residents to keep the streets cleared and not clog them with spectators so police and fire crews could still get quick access to the area.
Firefighters also removed some horses from a property late Friday, fearing the fire was getting too close. Salt Lake Animal Control took the horses to a shelter. Any resident who has questions about livestock can call Salt Lake Animal Control at 801-743-7269.
Residents who need to get into their homes for essentials, such as medication, can check in with the Unified Police Department at their command post, the LDS Stake Center near 14100 South and 7100 West, and requests will be handled on a case by case basis.
A Type 3 wildfire management team took over the fire Saturday morning, thought Unified Fire crews remained to help with ground support. An additional hand crew arrived overnight to help battle the fire.
Fire spokeswoman Kim Osborn said the goal for Saturday was to continue digging a fire line on the mountain and putting out hot spots. A helicopter resumed air drops about 8:30 a.m.
The fast-moving 10-alarm Rose Crest Fire, started about 3:30 p.m. Friday when a car was parked in an area of tall, dry grass and the heat from either the muffler or something under the car sparked a fire. The fire burned in an area just west of where the Machine Gun Fire burned three homes and some outbuildings in Herriman in September of 2010.
Approximately 950 homes were in the area where officials ordered a mandatory evacuation that would be in place through the night. Everyone east and south of Rose Canyon Road, including the subdivisions or Rose Canyon and Herriman Cove, were forced to evacuate.
Officials believed the majority of residents complied with the evacuation order, but conceded there may be some in the evacuation area who refused to leave.
The U.S. National Guard was also contributing resources to help fight the fire.
Hot conditions and more wind were predicted for Saturday.
