Rep. Jim Matheson is keenly aware that no taxing strategy ever employed in the United States has succeeded at getting more than 20 percent of the gross domestic product into the federal coffers. So why does he enthusiastically support the expansion of federal expenditures to 24 percent of GDP, while zealously voting against any measures to rein spending in? Is this his idea of "responsibly balancing the budget?" The only thing down this path is national bankruptcy.
