Edwin H. Fankhauser1938 - 2013Edwin Heiniger Fankhauser, 74, passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2013 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, neighbor, and friend. Ed was born April 19, 1938 in Salt Lake City to Paul Ephraim and Rosa Heiniger Fankhauser. He was the youngest of six children. When his heart stopped, a part of each of ours stopped too.He married Karen E Benson in the Salt Lake Temple June 8, 1964. They worked together to build strong family ties. As a devoted husband and father, he made sure that family trips were taken, heart-to-heart talks happened, and most importantly, that his family knew how much he loved them. He took time to coach his children's baseball, softball, and basketball teams. That devotion to family translated into his role as grandparent. He made it a priority to attend his grandchildren's games, recitals, and performances. Grandpa Ed was always up for an activity such as miniature golf, bowling, swimming, or a game of Yahtzee.He graduated from Olympus High School in 1956 where he played football and served as Student Body 2nd Vice-President. After receiving his MBA from the University of Utah, they moved to Glendale, California where he worked for Price Waterhouse. It was there that his love for golf developed. There were no bad days on the golf course. He was a popular professor in the Accounting department at the University of Utah. To many of his students he was known as "Big Ed." He taught for more than 30 years while also managing his own CPA practice. Ed was a true fan and loved attending Ute football and basketball games.Ed was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served three years as a full-time missionary in the Swiss-Austrian mission (1958-1961). He cherished the friendships forged during that time. The Swiss-Austrian missionary group has met monthly for 50 years. Recently, he and Karen served a Public Affairs mission in the Europe Area. He served as a bishop, Young Men's president, teacher, and in numerous other callings. He and Karen were currently serving in the Salt Lake Temple View Room and in a special project for Public Affairs. Perhaps his greatest service was acts of kindness to friends and neighbors.He was preceded in death by his parents and eldest sister, Ruth. He is survived by his wife, Karen, their 5 children, Laura (Michael) Kenner, Mark (Kelly), Michael, Jennifer (Jeff) Barnes, and Matt (Andrea), and 10 grandchildren, Lindsay and Parker Kenner; Jake and London Fankhauser; Emilie, Ada, and Sarah Barnes; and Max, Sam, and Dan Fankhauser. He is also survived by his siblings, Rosanne (Ken) Long, Ephraim (Camille), Miriam (Gary) Davis, and Donald (Jeralie); brother- in-laws, Farrell (Karla) Benson and Jack (Tudi) Benson, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.A viewing will be held Sunday, January 20, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 East 1300 South, Salt Lake City. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Monday, January 21, 2013 at the East Millcreek 12th Ward, 3103 East Craig Drive (3600 South), with a viewing from 10:30-11:30 a.m. prior.
