Connie De Ianni discusses what she considers to be the "key elements" needed to design a career. First, she says, "Identify your resources and those people that can be an advocate in your career." When you get advice from your mentors and emulate their pathway to success, you will more likely get where you want. Mentors are only the first of many resources you can use to build your career.

Another key resource is your education. Connie herself went back to college later in life to finish her education and she urges us to do the same saying, "Stay educated. If you haven't, go back to college and finish your degree."

In addition to furthering education, you need to do your job-search homework. Research all your options. Look at both what is available inside and outside your company. If it is within the organization, for example, collaborate with the other employees to expand your range of influence. If it is outside the organization, rely on resources you already have to give yourself an edge over the other job candidates.
