This area in Monroe County, Mo., is the approximate site of a branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints known as the Salt River Branch. It was also known as the Allred Settlement, named after its founder, James Allred.
Hyrum Smith's division of Zion's Camp arrived here on June 8, 1834. Remarkably, Joseph Smith's division had arrived the day before. The two groups had been separated for some five weeks, traveling hundreds of miles with no communication between them.
After resting and reorganizing for a few days, the two groups continued on as a single unit.
The actual site where this all took place is now covered by the waters of Mark Twain Lake, a man-made lake created by the Clarence Cannon Dam on the Salt River, Monroe County, Mo.
