PROVO — BYU backup quarterback Ammon Olsen is transferring to the place where he started his college football career, BYU officials confirmed Tuesday.
Olsen, a junior-to-be who played sparingly last year as Taysom Hill’s backup, is heading back to Southern Utah University. Olsen quarterbacked for the Thunderbirds prior to his mission, completing 8 of 14 passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns in six games as a freshman.
Earlier this week, SUU announced that former BYU coach Gary Crowton will be the school’s new offensive coordinator.
Olsen redshirted in 2013 at BYU after serving a mission. Last fall, he saw action in four games in a reserve role and completed one of three passes for four yards.
Because Olsen is transferring to an FCS program, he will not lose a year of eligibility and he can play next fall. The T-Birds are members of the Big Sky Conference.
With Olsen leaving, BYU’s likely backup for Hill will be either senior Christian Stewart or sophomore Billy Green.
