The Mormon Pioneer Cemetery is located at the intersection of Thornton and Crispin streets in Richmond, Ray County, Missouri. After years of neglect, the cemetery was finally cared for and examined to locate the lost sites of the graves.
In 1911, Junius F. Wells located the site where Oliver Cowdery (one of the Three Witnesses) had been buried and facilitated the placement of the Monument to the Three Witnesses on that site.
The headstone of Jacob Whitmer (one of the Eight Witnesses) once stood vertically but was reset horizontally in concrete at its present site. A small metal plaque notes that somewhere in the area are the remains of Peter Whitmer Sr. and his wife, Mary.
On Nov. 19, 2011, the Monument to the Three Witnesses was celebrated on the 100th anniversary of its placement. Brother Richard E. Turley Jr., assistant church historian, is pictured speaking on that occasion.
