SALT LAKE CITY — Apple iPhone 6 users can now ride Utah Transit Authority buses and trains with Apple Pay.

UTA buses and rail stations are equipped with near field communications readers and accept payment from contactless electronic cards and reader smartphone payment apps.

Once users have loaded a valid credit card to the Apple Pay account, they can start riding by tapping the front top of the phone to the card reader. The phone will automatically turn on and scan the user's fingerprint for authorization. When a green light appears on the reader, the fare has been paid.

Customers can also pay for multiple riders in the group with Apple Pay by tapping the phone multiple times to pay for more than one passenger. To do this, tap the tip of the phone to the reader, authorize the payment, move the phone away from the reader and tap again.

When using Apple Pay, SoftCard or Google Wallet, always be sure to tap off when exiting the bus, transfer from bus to a train or leave the final TRAX or FrontRunner station to avoid an incorrect charge. Tapping off is not necessary when transferring between TRAX lines.
