The heading to Section 51 of the Doctrine and Covenants notes that it was revealed to the Prophet Joseph Smith at Thompson, Ohio, which was located in northern Ohio about 20 miles east of Kirtland.

A convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Leman Copley owned over 700 acres of land that was then in Thompson. These images show land that Copley owned, including the cemetery where he and his wife are buried.

Following the reception of Section 51, a number of the Colesville Saints began improving and cultivating smaller parcels of the Copley farm given to them as principles of consecration were being revealed. Copley soon became disaffected from the church and withdrew his offer to let the Colesville Saints work the land, insisting that they vacate the property.

Seeking direction from the prophet, the Colesville Saints were subsequently instructed to move on to Missouri (see Doctrine and Covenants Section 54).

What was once the Copley farm is now part of Madison Township, Lake County, Ohio.
