PROVO — BYU shooting guard Tyler Haws is the nation’s fourth-leading scorer in NCAA men’s basketball, but according to a new video profile created by the NCAA, he learned how to be truly happy off the basketball court.

Haws said it was while serving as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Philippines that he found true happiness.

“I had so much fun,” Haws said. “I felt like I wanted to put my influence on the people, but really they’re the ones that influenced me, taught me so many life lessons, taught me how to be happy. You know, if you have your family, you have something to eat every day and you have God, there’s not much else that you need in life to be happy.”

Haws is shown in the video with his father, Marty Haws, and his coach, Dave Rose, sharing how his mission affected not only his life but also his basketball career.

Despite putting basketball aside for two years after a standout freshman season, Haws didn’t miss a beat upon returning. He averaged 21.7 points per game during his sophomore season, and as a junior last season, he averaged 23.2 ppg. This year he is averaging 23.8 ppg.
