The Utah Symphony will perform its final Masterworks concert of the season on May 23-24 at 8 p.m.

The Masterworks series offers the chance for audiences to gain a deeper understanding of music. Time is set aside before each performance for ticketholders to hear the conductor give background information and answer questions about the program.

Thierry Fischer, Utah Symphony’s music director, will conduct the performances at Abravanel Hall, 123 W. South Temple. The program will feature Rachmaninoff’s “Symphonic Dances” and Carl Nielsen’s Symphony No. 6.

Salt Lake City native and cellist Matthew Zalkind will join the Utah Symphony and his parents to play Tchaikovsky’s “Variations on a Rococo Theme for Cello and Orchestra.” Zalkind’s parents are both musicians in the Utah Symphony. His mother, Roberta Zalkind, is associate principal viola, and his father, Larry Zalkind, is principal trombone.

Tickets for the performance start at $18 and can be purchased online at arttix.org, by phone at 801-355-2787 or in person at the Abravanel Hall ticket office.
