The generosity of Utahns in both time and money put it on top in two recent studies and led The Washington Post to dub it, "this week's best state in America" Friday.

"A lesson all parents hope to instill in their children: it's better to give than to receive," Washington Post reporter Reid Wilson wrote. "Apparently, people who live in Utah get the message better than the rest of us."

Reid broke down data from a recent Gallup survey showing that 71 percent of Utah residents donated money to a charitable cause in the past month. He also examined a 2012 survey of itemized deductions conducted by the Chronicle of Philanthropy, which showed that the median contribution to a charity from a Utah resident was $5,255.
