The BYU football team kicks its 2014 football season on the road against UConn on Friday. Since LaVell Edwards took over as coach in 1972, BYU is 26-16 in season openers, and current coach Bronco Mendenhall is 6-3 in his nine years as head coach.

Since 1972, BYU has a 11-10 record on the road in season openers, averaging only 20 points per game in those contests. Playing at home is another story, as they have a 13-5 record and average 30 points per game in Provo.

Last year, BYU opened on the road at Virginia, falling to the Cavaliers 19-16 in a rain-delayed game. That game proved to be a highlight for Virginia and a lowlight for BYU, as Virginia went 2-10 on the season, their only other win coming against the Virginia Military Institute.

UConn is 8-2 in season openers over the last 10 years, but fell 33-18 to Towson at home in last season’s home opener. UConn struggled to an 0-9 start before winning the last three games of the season.
