BYU men’s golf kicks off its fall season at the Husky Invitational on Sept. 22-23 in Bremerton, Washington, and BYU women’s golf plays its third tournament in three weeks at the Cougar Cup on Sept. 22-23 in Pullman, Washington.
The Husky Invitational, which is hosted by No. 8 Washington, is a 15-team tournament that includes teams from the Pac-12 and West Coast Conference. Rival Utah will be at the tournament along with WCC foes Gonzaga, Pepperdine and Saint Mary’s.
The Cougars played great last season. They won the WCC Championship, which qualified them for the NCAA Auburn Regional where they finished in seventh place. Aside from the NCAA Regional, BYU finished in the top five of all of its tournaments, including three first-place finishes in the Pacific Invitational, Desert Shootout and the WCC Championship.
Head coach Bruce Brockbank, who was named the West Coast Conference Coach of the year last season, is back for his 22nd season as the head coach of the men’s golf team.
The Cougars are returning seniors Joe Parkinson and Jordan Rodgers, two players who were named to the All-WCC Men’s Golf Team last season.
Parkinson won his first individual collegiate tournament last year in the Pacific Invitational. His 69.58 stroke average led all Cougars, and he finished in the top 10 in seven of the 12 tournaments he competed in.
Rodgers finished in the top 20 six times last season, his top finish coming from the Pacific Invitational where he shot 6-under-par and tied for fifth place individually. He also tied for fifth place at the WCC Championship, shooting 1-over-par.
There is only one freshman on this year’s roster, Austin Banz from Salt Lake City, Utah. In high school, his lowest score shot was 64.
The women will be playing in the Cougar Cup, hosted by Washington State. There will be 10 teams at the tournament, including fellow West Coast Conference member Santa Clara.
After a 12th-place finish at the Dick McGuire Invitational earlier this week, the Cougars are looking to build on their consistency. Junior Lea Garner led BYU this week, shooting 2-over-par and finishing in a tie for 12th place.
The men tee off Monday at 8:00 a.m., at the Gold Mountain Club. The women tee off at 8:30 a.m. on Monday at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club.
