SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Supreme Court Justice Jill Parrish has been nominated for a federal district judgeship by President Barack Obama.

Parrish, who has served on the state's high court since 2003, was among the seven judges nominated by the president Thursday. She was the second woman to hold a Utah Supreme Court seat and was nominated by former Gov. Mike Leavitt.

"I am honored to put forward these highly qualified candidates for the federal bench," Obama said in a statement Thursday. "They will be distinguished public servants and valuable additions to the United States District Court."

Parrish graduated summa cum laude from then Weber State College in 1982 before receiving her juris doctorate from Yale Law School in 1985. She began her legal career as a clerk in Utah's district court, worked for the Salt Lake-based Parr Brown Gee & Loveless law firm and served as an assistant United States attorney from 1995 to 2003.
