Records, as they always say, are meant to be broken.
And when it comes to Utah high school football, there are a couple of longstanding records that are about to fall — possibly as soon as this week.
Brighton High senior wide receiver Simi Fehoko had another monstrous performance in last Wednesday's win over Copper Hills, hauling in five touchdown passes — all of them coming in the first half of the Bengals' eventual 59-8 victory. On the night, Fehoko finished with six receptions for 198 yards.
Those five TD catches pushed his career total to 40 — just one shy of the state's career record co-holders, Austin Raught of Fremont (2003-05) and Cody Raymond of Jordan (2005-07), who each had 41 TD receptions in their careers, according to the impeccable record-keeping compiled by Utah prep football historian George Felt.
Fehoko, who has committed to play his college football at Stanford University, also pushed his career receiving yards total near the top of the charts with last week's 198-yard performance. Fehoko moved past Raymond (No. 2 all-time with 3,326 yards) and now has 3,442 yards receiving — just three yards short of Raught's state-record total of 3,445.
So, with one more catch, the Bengals' stellar senior could easily surpass Raught's yardage record, which has stood for 10 years. And the TD receptions mark is well within his grasp as well, although that one might be a little tougher, especially since the Bengals face top-ranked Bingham this week.
But Fehoko will have at least one playoff game beyond this week to help push his career totals even higher.
Though two of Raught's coveted receiving records could fall soon, his remaining record — career receptions — seems safe. After all, he had a mighty impressive 231 career catches at Fremont.
Fehoko, meanwhile is 13th all-time in career catches with 131 — a hundred receptions behind Raught.
Of course, what that means is that Fehoko has averaged an amazing 26-plus yards per catch in his high school career — an absolutely incredible achievement for any pass receiver at any level.
Fehoko isn't a one-trick pony, either, as he has piled up 11 interceptions as a safety for the Brighton defense.
And Fehoko isn't the only guy climbing the career charts in what has become the year of the receiver in Utah prep football.
Sky View's Bryce Mortenson had three touchdown catches in a 44-10 victory over Fremont this past week, running his career total to 35. That puts Mortenson, who also has 131 career receptions, in fifth place all-time in career TD catches.
Jordan High's Spencer Curtis is also moving up the career receiving charts. After last week's loss to Bingham, when Curtis had nine catches for 157 yards and a touchdown, he now stands fifth all-time in career receiving yards with 2,826 and is ninth in career receptions with 162.
Sky View and Jordan, like Brighton, are poised to possibly make a deep run in the state playoffs, so Mortenson and Curtis will also be in position to move further up the all-time lists before their prep careers are complete.
