Not all Halloween treats will be candy this year in the United States.
In fact, Deseret News reporter Payton Davis wrote about a new campaign called the Teal Pumpkin Project, which encourages households to put teal pumpkins outside their doorstep to signify to trick-or-treaters that they’re offering nonfood items.
This is mostly being done to help children with food allergies avoid foods and snacks that could make them sick, Davis reported.
"You see, teal pumpkins mean that you know that not all kids can have all foods and that you can provide a fun nonfood treat to the little ghosts and goblins that visit your home on Oct. 31," Yahoo Parenting reported, according to Davis.
Finding the right nonfood items to give out could be a struggle, since most grocery stores are dressed with bags and bags of candy, which are easy choices for last-minute Halloween giveaways.
But of all things, toys may be the right product to give out.
Learning Express Toys, which sells party favors, small toys and decorating products, has come out in support of the Teal Project Campaign and encourages households to offer small toys to trick-or-treaters on Halloween night.
“We want Halloween to be a safe, fun holiday for all children, and believe toys are the perfect alternative to food treats,” Sharon DiMinico, founder and CEO of Learning Express, said in an press release sent to Deseret News National.
