ANTELOPE ISLAND STATE PARK — Antelope Island State Park is inviting the pubic to learn more about the island’s bison herd on Saturday, Nov. 28, at 11 a.m. in the Visitor Center’s theater room.
Charity Gibson, park naturalist, will discuss the history of bison in the United States, their decline and comeback. Bison are the island’s most famous residents. Twelve animals were brought to the island in 1893 and were the foundation for today’s herd of 550 to 700 animals, according to the park's website. An annual bison roundup is held each fall to assess the health of the hard and sell extra animals.
In addition, a curator will offer guided tours at the Fielding Garr Ranch at 2 p.m. on Nov. 28. Visitors will get to see the original ranch house, shearing barns and corrals. Please be sure to dress for the weather, as the tour takes place outside.
Antelope Island State Park is located approximately 41 miles north of Salt Lake City. Take Exit 332 off I-15, then drive west on Antelope Drive to the park entrance gate.
There is an entrance fee of $10 per vehicle for up to eight people; the entrance fee for senior citizens is $5 per vehicle for up to eight people.
