Disney released the first trailer for its next installment in the Marvel superhero franchise, “Captain America: Civil War,” Tuesday night on Jimmey Kimmel, surprising fans and already setting the stage for the post Star Wars movie season next spring.
Set to release on May 6, 2016, the next Captain America movie will feature parts of the Marvel comic’s Civil War timeline, which pitted members of the Avengers against one another over a split in how to interact with the world’s governments.
The trailer shows Captain America, Chris Evans, apparently sticking his neck out for his former friend and comrade Bucky (Sebastian Stan) — aka the Winter Soldier — despite objections. A host of other superheroes then appears, such as Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Black Panther, played by Chadwick Boseman.
Tension between Iron Man and Captain America has been building ever since the first Avengers, with both having different views as to what the role of superheroes should be in the world. The last few seconds of the trailer show Captain America trying to defend his actions, saying that he’s only doing what he’s doing because Bucky is his friend. “So was I,” replies Iron Man, before they begin fighting.
