The University of Utah football team received a big commitment from an in-state prospect on Friday night.
As in 6 feet, 5 inches and 305 pounds big courtesy of East High School offensive lineman Johnny Maea. Leopards head coach Brandon Matich confirmed Maea’s decision with the Deseret News.
Rated a three-star prospect by both Rivals and Scout, Maea has been highly sought after, with offers from multiple schools in both the Pac-12 and Mountain West conferences. As a senior this fall, he was key in helping the Leopards set a new state rushing record with 5,509 yards on the ground during the campaign en route to the 4A title.
“He is a big body with exceptional feet and hips,” Matich said in a text message. “He is very explosive off the football and moves well in pass (protection). But, more importantly he is a person of high character!”
Maea was selected as a member of the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl team in October. The game will be played Jan. 3 in California.
