Mormon Tabernacle Choir inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame

SALT LAKE CITY — The Mormon Tabernacle Choir now has something in common with famous musicians like John Williams, Aaron Copland and John Philip Sousa.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, a goodwill ambassador for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was inducted into the American Classic Music Hall of Fame prior to a concert for the American Choral Directors Association national conference Thursday.

Tim Sharp, ACDA';s executive director, made the surprise announcement, recognizing the choir for "140 years of dedication to the choral arts and for its significant presence in the world of classical music," a press release said.

"This remarkable ensemble of 360 volunteers has inspired generations of choral conductors such as you and me through concerts, recordings, broadcasts, tours and prestigious appearances at world’s fairs and U.S. presidential inaugurations," Sharp said in a press release. "Together with the Orchestra at Temple Square, they continue to inspire us with their work."

The choir received an American Classical Music Hall of Fame medallion with distinguished musicians, peers and choral music enthusiasts in the audience, which added to the moment, said Ron Jarrett, president of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

"It is so humbling to be given this honor. We stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us, dedicating their lives to music because of its power to unite, give comfort, peace and joy," Jarrett said in a press release. "We will continue to pursue excellence in song for generations to come."

When completed, an engraved pavement stone bearing the name of the choir will be placed on the American Classical Walk of Fame in Washington Park in Cincinnati.

Famous musicians in the Hall of Fame include Williams, Copland, Sousa, Igor Stravinsky, Beverly Sills, Scott Joplin and George Gershwin, among many others.

The American Classical Musical Hall of Fame was founded in 1996 and champions American classical music.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is one of the oldest, largest and most recognizable choirs in the world and continues to carry the world's longest continuing network broadcast, "Music and the Spoken Word," each week.
