WEST JORDAN — One man died and another driver was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence following a three-vehicle crash Tuesday.
About 7:15 a.m., a pickup truck heading north on Redwood Road ran a red light at 8200 South and collided with two other vehicles, according to West Jordan Police Sgt. Dan Roberts.
One car was pushed "several hundred feet" from the intersection into a dry canal, Roberts said. William Horner, 73, of West Jordan, who was driving the car, was killed. A woman who was a passenger in the car was injured.
After being treated for his injuries, Cole Douglas Munoz, 32, who was driving the truck, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of automobile homicide, driving under the influence causing serious injury, driving with a revoked or suspended license, a weapons violation and other traffic violations, according to police.
Munoz was driving under the influence, according to Roberts. "We don't know if it's alcohol or something else," he said.
Police are investigating "suspicious" materials recovered in the truck that may have caused Munoz to be impaired, Roberts said.
A glass pipe typically used for drug consumption was found in Munoz's car, according to a Salt Lake County Jail report. Munoz was nervously fidgeting and acting sleepy, which are common signs of drug use, police said.
Munoz admitted he owned the pipe and said he was up all night getting high on drugs, according to the report. He allegedly admitted to being high at the time of the crash.
The sergeant said it was unclear how fast the truck was going through the intersection, though the speed limit there is 45 mph.
"It's just a terrible accident," Roberts said.
Redwood Road was closed from 7800 South to 8200 South for several hours while firefighters used ropes to pull the car out of the canal and clean up the scene.
A search of court records shows Munoz has pleaded guilty to several charges since 2002, including driving under the influence, criminal mischief, attempted possession of a firearm by a restricted person, and several drug and traffic charges.
