Real Monarchs, Real Salt Lake’s United Soccer League (USL) affiliate, earned its first win in club history, as the Monarchs defeated the defending USL champion Sacramento Republic 1-0 at Rio Tinto Stadium on Wednesday night.
Monarchs forward Max Rauhofer scored his second goal of the season in the 68th minute as a Fito Ovalle shot was redirected into the back of the next by Rauhofer to give the home side the lead. Sacramento looked for the equalizer in the 89th minute, as Republic midfielder Gabe Gonzalez got his head on a ball from the left side, but his shot was shuffled away at the near post by Monarch goalkeeper Lalo Fernandez, who earned his second shutout of the season.
The Monarchs improved to 1-4-2 (5 points) on the season, and will look to continue their winning ways in their next match when they travel to Texas to take on the Austin Aztex on May 9.
