SANDY — If Lucy Biles ever wondered if she’d be an effective angry runner, she found out Saturday.
The Herriman senior’s first two races at the state meet this weekend ended in frustrating second- and third-place finishes, but with her legacy on the line and Herriman’s team title in doubt, Biles kicked it into another gear late in Saturday’s meet.
Running “angry,” Biles won the 800 meters and then anchored the 800-meter leg of the medley relay, giving her 11 career gold medals at the state meet.
“My first two races weren’t really how I wanted them to be, I kind of ran bad. Coming into that 800, I kind of wanted to do it for my team and myself,” said Biles. “I feel like I kind of let them down with my other two events, so I knew coming back into these other two I had to do it for the team.”
Her performances were exactly what Herriman needed as it narrowly pulled away from Davis to capture the 5A state title, its third straight, 133 to 123.
Herriman’s championship was one of three tightly contested team titles on another cold and rainy day at BYU. Maple Mountain atoned for losing last year’s 4A title on the final race by winning the 2015 title on the final race.
In 2A, Millard dethroned six-time champion North Summit with a strong performance late Saturday in the discus and 4x400 relay.
In 3A, Desert Hills ran away from the field for the school’s first girls track title while Panguitch dominated 1A for its third straight title.
Millard’s Anna Camp provided arguably the biggest story of the meet. Knowing the 2A team race would be tight, Millard’s coach decided to have Camp run in four individual events — 400, 800, 1,600 and 3,200 — instead of a mix of individual events and relays. Incredibly, she won all four events.
She won the 1,600 on Friday and then the other three on Saturday.
“That’s what I came into this year kind of hoping, and my coaches believed in me. It feels good to have it done,” said Camp, who ironically called herself a “wuss” when it comes to running in the rain. It rained off and on throughout Saturday’s meet, but it didn’t seem to affect Camp.
Millard won with 129 points, followed by North Summit with 119. Along with Camp’s dominant meet, Enterprise’s Jaslyn Gardner (100 and 200) and Elsja Mecham (both hurdles) had great meets too.
Gardner set a new 2A record with her time of 11.98 in the 100 meters.
While Biles stole the show late in the 5A meet, early on it was Davis sophomore Aubrey Argyle's moment once again as she opened Saturday’s competition by winning the 3,200 in a state-best time of 10:35.87.
Herriman’s Kaysha Love had another stellar state meet for the Mustangs, winning the 100 and 200 meters for the third straight year.
In 4A, Elli Eastmond was the final hero in a great team effort for Maple Mountain. Heading into the last 4x400 race, the Golden Eagles led Orem by one point. Last year the team title was up for grabs on the last race too, and Maple Mountain wound up finishing second to Box Elder by one point.
Eastmond anchored the leg both years, but on Saturday she wasn’t about to get passed.
“When I got the baton I was determined I didn’t want that to happen again. On that last stretch, I was like, this is it, I’m not giving up, I’m not going to lose again,” said Eastmond.
Molly Edlund won Maple Mountain’s only other event on Saturday in the 300 hurdles as the Golden Eagles tallied 76 points, followed by Orem with 69.
As expected, Desert Hills ran away with the 3A title tallying 99 points, followed by Cedar with 61.5. Olivia Leavitt won the 100 hurdles for the Thunder while Kaylee Carter won the 300 hurdles.
Bear River’s Whitney Wilcox was the star of the 3A meet as she won the 100, 200 and 400 meters.
Panguitch tallied 185 points to run away with the 1A title, one of four state titles for Panguitch’s girls this year (volleyball, girls basketball, cross country).
“It’s really fun to see your hard work pay off,” said Whittni Orton, who won the 800 and 3,200 on Saturday to go along with her 1,600 win on Friday. Darri Frandsen won the discus for Panguitch.
