"I AM READY NOW: The Life Story of Ephraim Knowlton Hanks," by J. Phillip Hanks, $21.35, 212 pages (nf)
The history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is brimming with stories of amazing feats of endurance, ingenuity, faith, sacrifice and dedication. Many early members of the LDS Church are well-known while others are unsung heroes.
Ephraim Knowlton Hanks’ name is among those that are familiar to most LDS Church history buffs for his efforts to rescue the Martin Handcart Company.
A book bearing the title of his oft-repeated slogan, "I Am Ready Now" has been written by his youngest grandson, J. Phillip Hanks, in an effort to archive and compile all the known facts about his grandfather.
Hanks explains that documents have recently been uncovered that fill in the gaps on his grandfather’s early life and showcase some experiences not yet shared elsewhere. In the book, Hanks discusses Ephraim Hanks’ early life, details his time spent on the USS Columbus as a young sailor, his conversion to the LDS Church, his service in the Mormon Battalion, carrying mail for the Pony Express, his time in Utah building the kingdom, rescuing members of the Willie and Martin handcart companies, fighting in the Utah War and dealing with the Indians, years of church service, his family life and more.
Although Ephraim Hanks did not keep a personal journal, his grandson has been able to put together a very extensive overview of his grandfather’s life. It is filled with footnotes, pedigree charts, photos, appendixes and stories shared by those who knew him. One of the things Ephraim Hanks was well-known for was being in tune with the Spirit. As a result, he seemed to always be prepared and ready to serve at a moment’s notice. When given a task by an LDS Church leader, he responded with his quick and regular reply, “I am ready now.”
There is no swearing, sex or violence, but some of the harsh realities of pioneer life are included.
