LEHI — A 17-year-old Lehi girl died and another teenager was hospitalized in critical condition after a late-night rollover crash Thursday.
Four of the six teenagers in the car were thrown from the vehicle in the accident.
Police say Maryah Hayley Edwards was killed when the vehicle she was driving rolled on a winding road outside of Lehi about 11 p.m. Edwards lost control navigating a curve in the road, sending the vehicle rolling near 2300 North and 600 East. A witness saw the crash occur and called police.
Police estimate Edwards was driving faster than 50 mph at the time of the crash, according to Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon. A 20 mph speed advisory is posted on the road.
Edwards was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was thrown from the vehicle.
Jayden Farrell, 17, of Lehi, was also ejected from the vehicle and suffered a broken back, broken neck and head injuries. Farrell was taken by medical helicopter to Intermountain Medical Center where he underwent surgery and remained in extremely critical condition Friday, Cannon reported.
Two passengers, a 16-year-old girl and a 17-year-old girl, suffered a broken neck and a broken tailbone. Their injuries were not life-threatening, Cannon said.
Another 17-year-old Lehi girl riding in the front seat was wearing a seat belt. She sustained only minor injuries.
The crash remains under investigation, including whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the accident.
