Celebrity gossip permeates news coverage these days, so it’s nice when we can report on something positive about ever-present media stars.

Take, for instance, Taylor Swift. Instead of rumors swirling about a new boyfriend, news following Swift this week centered on the care she showed when she gave a young fan $50,000 for her battle against cancer.

Johnny Depp took time out from filming and, dressed up as Jack Sparrow, visited sick children in an Australian hospital .

But it’s not just celebrities who stepped up to the plate this week. People all over the U.S. help their communities in one way or another every day; and even if their service isn’t recognized globally, it doesn’t mean the families involved appreciate it any less.

So here’s a roundup of inspiring stories and videos of celebrities and lesser-known heroes serving others.
