Former Utah cornerback R.J. Stanford, who spent the past three seasons playing for the Miami Dolphins, signed with the Detroit Lions on Tuesday.
He gives Detroit 90 players as the team prepares to report to training camp on Sunday.
Stanford is a sixth-year pro, after being selected in the seventh round by Carolina in the 2010 NFL draft. During his career, he's played in 46 games and has 51 tackles, three pass deflections and two interceptions.
After playing his first two NFL seasons with the Panthers, Stanford joined Miami in 2012 and had a career-best 21 tackles that season.
He signed with Cincinnati during the 2014 offseason but was released before the season began. The Dolphins re-signed him in November last year and he played five games for Miami, starting one, and had 12 tackles, two pass deflections and an interception.
The Dolphins, however, did not tender an offer sheet to Stanford in March, making him an unrestricted free agent.
Stanford is the sixth player for the Lions with a Utah connection, all on defense. Others with ties to the state include defensive tackle Haloti Ngata (Highland High), defensive end Ezekiel Ansah (BYU), linebacker Kyle Van Noy (BYU), cornerback Nevin Lawson (Utah State) and rookie safety Brian Suite (Utah State).
