"A HERO RISES: Moroni and the Battle for Manti," by Jason Mow, Ethos Productions, $17.99, 353 pages (f)
Author Jason Mow uses his experience in the military to animate the war chapters in the Book of Mormon. "A Hero Rises: Moroni and the Battle for Manti" is the first novel in The War Chapters series. It is a fictional work that offers a fast-moving experience and a unique perspective of a then-Gen. Moroni and shows how at a young age he was prepared to lead the Nephite army.
Mow, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was working for the U.S. government in Afghanistan when The War Chapters formed in his mind. After a rocket attack on his base, Mow turned to the scriptures and “found comfort in reading about the experiences of Captain Moroni,” according to biographical information included in the book. The scenes that “played out in his mind all throughout his time there” make for vivid pictures that can inspire youth and adults to be courageous and obedient to the Lord, even in times of trial.
Readers familiar with the Book of Mormon will recognize names such as Moroni, Teancum and Lehi who Mow brings to life in fascinating battle scenes that are strategic and intricate in their details.
The fictionalized drama jumps from story to story, which may make it difficult to follow. Fictional characters are introduced and modern language is used which, while not consistent with the time period, may help readers identify with the characters. Mow gives Moroni real struggles, weaknesses, temptations, inner demons and anger. By doing this, the reader may be able to relate more to the great leader. Also included in the book are beautiful illustrations by Gabe Bonilla.
There is no sexual content or swearing, but there is descriptive war violence, including a scalping, beheading, death by sword, arrows, hands and javelin. Mow’s experience in the military is evident as the war scenes are very life-like.
Besides the physical war aspect of the book, readers can “liken” the book to the spiritual, mental and emotional battles that are fought in the world today. It is a great reminder that the Book of Mormon is written for today, and as readers search the scriptures, they can find the types and shadows that will prepare them to stand against the enemy.
